about

As a petulant young adult I couldn't help feeling misunderstood by my parents and so I decided to write a few songs full of my immature indignation. My father is..well, an ode to the man himself I suppose! But don't be thinking this is entirely about spitting chips. There is a sentimental undercurrent which I hope shines through, because in reality, despite their faults our parents are our parents and we love them really ;-) Disclaimer: all lyrics in this song are my (probably warped) opinion only and do not reflect the ABSOLUTE truth of the matter. Don't try this kind of tirade at home unless you want a clip around the ear! 😆

Mood is upbeat, slightly angsty, ironical, sardonic, sarcastic, pop with attitude. Military style drum beats going on in there, lots of guitar, witty lyrics. The over riding theme and feel is of love and celebrating a relationship, however troubled. Uplifting. Positive. Happy. Nostalgic.

My Father Lyrics

Verse 1

He's a man of science
Who idolises Jesus
He's a damn good liar
And a wide eyed believer
Such a diplomat
He knows what to say
And when to listen
Just be wary that
He has a way with words
And he may twist them
Jokes about his body
Then swears that he'll get fit again
Smokes a big fat Roly
Then counteracts it with a vitamin
Feeds upon his own misery
Then drinks to drown his sorrows
Never do today what can be
Delayed until tomorrow
That's his motto

Bridge

He's a walking talking contradiction
Laying down the law
With no conviction
King of hypocrites
And he never listens
Yet I ..... Forgive him... Cos

Chorus

He's my Father
He's the only one I'll ever have
I'd rather
He wasn't such a complicated man
But after all no-ones perfect
Here I stand ... to prove the fact!

Verse 2

He's an open story
Full of blank pages
He's a big soft Teddy bear
Who flies into violent rages
Life with him is like
Some infernal journey of emotion
All the highs and lows of a
Never-ending rollercoaster...

Deep and dark and changing
Like the ocean
Secret hopes and dreams
But he won’t show them
Sometimes I give up cos it feels as though
I’ll never really know him...

Chorus
But he’s my father ....
He's the only one I'll ever have
I'd rather
He wasn't such a complicated man
But after all no-ones perfect
Here I stand ... to prove the fact!
I guess I could try harder
To climb into his mind and understand
The twisted logic
behind the wicked acts
Or could it be that he
Just likes being bad?
And making me mad?
My rather infuriating Dad.

Verse 3 -
In his mind there’s nothing up above him
Thinks he knows it all and I know nothing..
Drives me up the wall but I’ll tell you something..
I will always love him...

Chorus
Cos - he’s my father ....
He's the only one I'll ever have
I'd rather
He wasn't such a complicated man
But after all no-ones perfect
Here I stand ... to prove the fact!
I guess I could try harder
To climb into his mind and understand
The twisted logic
behind the wicked acts
Or could it be that he
Just likes being bad?
And making me sad?
My rather infuriating Dad.
